Agency marked end of CleanPowerSF enrollment with unique Downtown event
San Francisco, CA — The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) celebrated a clean power milestone with a viral “molecule mob” activation yesterday. This light-hearted and innovative spectacle commemorated the completion of the SFPUC’s largest and last major enrollment of CleanPowerSF, San Francisco’s renewable energy program.
As a result of this month’s enrollment, more than 360,000 businesses and residents are now receiving renewable energy through CleanPowerSF. Combined with the municipal facilities currently receiving hydroelectricity from the SFPUC’s Hetch Hetchy Power System, the agency now meets 80 percent of the electricity demand in San Francisco.
Those dual clean power alternatives have played a key role in helping the City reduce its greenhouse emissions by 36 percent below 1990 levels.
Yesterday’s activation illustrated how CleanPowerSF and Hetch Hetchy power are reducing greenhouse emissions, as participants dressed up as carbon busters and molecules. The mob took over Embarcadero Plaza officially at 11 a.m., walked up Market Street, looped around Union Square, and ended at Civic Center Plaza.
Molecule Mob schedule:
• 11 a.m.: Embarcadero Plaza
• 11:30 a.m. Market Street
• 12:15 p.m. Union Square
• 1 p.m. Civic Center Plaza
Last year, the SFPUC celebrated 100 years of the Hetch Hetchy Power System, which provides 100 percent greenhouse gas-free hydroelectricity to public facilities such as City Hall, San Francisco International Airport, Muni vehicles, schools and libraries.
