What CleanPowerSF Customers Can Expect with New Rates Starting July 1, 2024

In case you missed it: new electricity rates for CleanPowerSF customers were adopted by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission on May 14, 2024, and will be effective July 1, 2024. Through a transparent and public process, these rates have been carefully designed to prioritize local customers rather than profits for shareholders.

As a not-for profit power provider, CleanPowerSF continues to focus on providing clean, affordable and reliable electricity services to our customers. In 2023 alone, CleanPowerSF customers saved more than $50 million in bill savings compared to PG&E rates.

As we approach July 1, 2024, CleanPowerSF customers may be curious about the upcoming rate changes. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:

CHANGES TO GENERATION RATES
Starting July 1, CleanPowerSF customers will experience, on average, an 8.5% rate increase for generation service.

  • An average residential customer will experience a $4 increase per month

  • An average small business customer will experience a $16 increase per month

CleanPowerSF generation charges are reflected on your monthly PG&E bill and only comprise a portion of your total electricity charges. PG&E delivery charges are also changing on July 1.

WHAT’S CAUSING THE RATE CHANGE
As your electricity supplier, we continue to prioritize affordability when it comes to where and how we source clean power for our 385,000 customers. Recent increases in power supply costs in California have resulted in increased costs for providing clean, reliable power for our customers.

COMPETITIVE RATES, CLEANER ENERGY
Our rates have historically been competitive with PG&E’s.
As a result, we have helped San Francisco ratepayers save millions of dollars on their electricity bills. In 2023 alone, we helped save CleanPowerSF customers $50 million.

CleanPowerSF continues to offer a much cleaner energy mix than PG&E. PG&E currently offers energy that is about 45% clean and renewable. CleanPowerSF’s Green service provides at least 50% renewable energy (by state standards) and another 40% of our mix is large hydropower, making our electricity service more than 90% clean and renewable.

STABLE RATES FOR THE YEAR
One of the advantages of choosing CleanPowerSF is our commitment to rate stability and predictability. CleanPowerSF’s rates will remain unchanged from July 2024 through June 2025, providing predictability for your pocketbook. In contrast, PG&E has already implemented four rate changes this year alone and may continue to adjust their rates for both generation and delivery services over the next year.
